Last week we celebrated the birthday of a beautiful friend, Sonora Dolce (pictured in the blue dress). I'm a bit obsessed with Sonora's name as it translates to Sweet (Dolce) Pleasant Sound/Song (Sonora). This lovely lady is also an opera singer, so she is pretty much destined to be known. AND she's born and raised in the Bronx, so don't be fooled.
You've seen her here first blogger world, you're welcome.
Her birthday request was to check out the Cape Town jazz scene, and we were all down for an adventurous night, and an adventurous night it was indeed. Sonora and I did our best google search for nearby jazz venues that received good enough reviews, and we selected one called the Generations Cafe (otherwise known as G-Spot). Long story short, we found this place (unknowingly) located in an isolated industrial area and had arrived too early for the jazz set, so one of the managers recommended we grab dinner nearby before we returned.
And yet, the only bit of civilization nearby was a casino that could have doubled as a palace or luxury hotel. So we roamed around for a while in the great "outdoor-indoors," as the street seen above is actually inside the building. We strolled through the artificial night to find that the next hall over was an artificial day with clear, blue skies, ponds, and greenery.
Alas, we found a restaurant for dinner and prepared a makeshift set of celebratory birthday candles with the table centerpieces. After dinner we finally made it back to the G-Spot...learning quite well that "Generations" Cafe represented much of the older generations. We've got a nice track record for crashing the hang-out spots of those well beyond our years. And still, those are some of my favorite nights.
Here's to nights that don't go as planned, here's to our favorite Sweet Song.
